GRAYSON COUNTY, TEXAS -- The storms that hit Leonard and Randolph on June 13th left behind some damage. Weather experts declared that an EF-0 tornado touched down in Randolph.

But it was amateurs who helped storm spotters warn people to take cover.

"Last year we were doing like emergency action teams," Boy Scouts Camp James Ray staffperson Darrell Quarel said.

For the past two years, the camp staff for Boy Scouts Camp James Ray has been working to help the camp earn the title of "storm ready" from the National Weather Service.

"Well there was a lot of training that went on with the staff and the young people that are involved in scouting and a lot of things that we had to do with the camp," Boy Scouts Circle Ten Council CEO Pat Currie said.

Their hard work has paid off.

"First camp of any kind, not just Boy Scout camp, in the state of Texas, to earn recognition as a storm ready camp," Currie said.

Today, Grayson County commissioners made a proclamation honoring their emergency preparedness.

"It's been a couple years of work and we're real proud of it," Currie said.

To earn the certification, the scouts had to go through SKYWARN training.

They learned how to warn people of storms and help teach them where to take cover, which is what they helped storm spotters do on June 13th.

"I would say that everyone should follow the scout motto and be prepared no matter what environment you're in, because you just never know," Currie said.

Camp staffers say they're already working toward their next big achievement.

"Knowing all of us, we're probably going to find something else to get in the next few years," Quarel said.
