GAINESVILLE, TEXAS -- A pop of color today at Wheeler House assisted living in Gainesville. North Central Texas College cosmetology freshmen spent their morning glitzing and glamming residents with manicures and facials.
"I wish I could have one of them about every other day," resident Eva King said.
This is Eva's second time to get her nails done here by Logan Broker.
"He's good," King said.
Logan is one of many cosmetology students who are volunteering to take on these seniors as their first clients.
"They get really excited when we come and we get excited," Broker said.
"When they come in first day, I tell them that we are community college, that there is community service that I require from them and this is one of them," NCTC cosmetology instructor Kerrie Stewart said.
"It's wonderful. It helps everyone out here," King said.
"I think it's real great," resident Jewell Rich said.
"We enjoy them very much. They're real sweet to us," resident Maybelle Prelip said.
Not only is this enjoyable for residents, it also provides them a great service.
Joyce Woolfolk cares for the residents. She says there's something special about being pampered in this way.
"Anytime you take the time to touch someone, if it's their hand, their arm, their leg, those people relate and that means a lot more than just saying, 'Good morning, how are you?'" Woolfolk said.
Just like Eva and Logan, Joyce says the residents connect to these students.
"They get attached. It's just like having your grandkids come see you," Woolfolk said.
"I think it's wonderful and it helps them learn too," resident Lucille Tucker said.
