New hearing set in Lester Bower quadruple homicide case

Nearly 30 years after he was convicted of capital murder in a quadruple homicide, Lester Bower's case still continues - with another court date set.

Lester Bower's defense attorneys say they have DNA evidence that exonerates him of the crime. DNA testing has been going on for the last few years on evidence from the crime scene.

Now, a judge will determine if the evidence is enough.

District Attorney Joe Brown said depending on the judge's ruling, Bower's case could either be overturned, or his appeal could be dismissed and a new execution date ultimately set.

Bower was convicted in 1984 for killing four people in an airplane hanger at the Tate Ranch.

He has been on death row for more than 20 years.

Brown said the reason for the lengthy wait has been "one delay tactic after another."

He said he doesn't think the case will be overturned.

"It's our opinion that it doesn't show anything that exonerates Mr. Bower, doesn't show anything that makes him any less guilty," he said. "So we anticipate and we believe the judge will forward the case back to the court of appeals and deny the motion for appeal based on the DNA motion."

Brown said he hopes to have the case closed and new execution date set by the end of the year.
