SHERMAN, TEXAS -- Sherman City Attorney Brandon Shelby is drafting a new taxi cab ordinance that should make taxis safer.

He says it should give riders assurance knowing that the cabs are officially registered with the city.

That registration will require taxis to maintain some sort of commercial insurance, registration, inspection checks and background checks.

"That requires taxi cabs to register with the city so we know who's doing business, but that also simplifies the rate structure so customers of the cabs know what they're going to be charged before they're picked up," Shelby said.

Shelby says the city has had a cab ordinance in effect since 1995, but it hasn't been enforced.
