New Texas laws take effect

AUSTIN, TX - A handful of laws passed by the Texas Legislature last session take effect this week.

Most notable is a new law that require all college students attending school in Texas to get a meningitis shot. The law, which applies to all public and private universities, as well as community and junior colleges, requires students to have had the meningitis vaccine within the last five years.

Another new Texas law makes spouses of veterans exempt from paying property taxes on their homes. And the controversial "can ban" goes into effect in New Braunfels for those who "float" the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers, which prohibits the use of disposable containers on the rivers.
