North Texas reports 19th West Nile death

DENTON, Texas (AP) - Health officials say another North Texas resident has died from West Nile fever, bringing the death toll in the Dallas-Fort Worth area to at least 19.

Denton County health officials say a Carrollton woman described as in her 80s died in a hospital Friday from West Nile fever. She's the second West Nile death to be reported in the largely suburban county.

The death also brings the state West Nile death toll to at least 29.

The Dallas area has been the focus of this year's U.S. outbreak. Almost 290 human cases have been confirmed in Dallas County alone, which has begun aerial spraying for mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes spread the virus from birds to people. One in 150 infected people develop severe symptoms including neck stiffness, disorientation, coma and paralysis.
