OHP's 2013 Crash Reduction Program focuses on DUIs and seat belts

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has set forth its New Years resolutions in their annual Crash Reduction Program. This year OHP hopes to crack down on DUI and seat belt violations.

Lieutenant Darian Galloway said drivers shouldn't expect many warnings in the coming year.

"We're trying to get the public to understand that we're becoming more strict.," said Lt. Galloway. "Historically, the highway patrol has written a lot of warnings. And people kind of anticipate the warnings."

Drivers can see that stricter attitude in the goals OHP has set. Those include a 10 percent increase in seat belt citations, 5 percent increase in DUI arrests and a 2 percent reduction of fatal and serious injury collisions. To meet the seat belt goal specifically, troopers will have more latitude within city limits.

"People who don't wear their seatbelts in town eventually wind up leaving town where speeds are increased which increases the chance for serious injury," said Lt. Galloway.

But drivers are just one part of the equation. OHP is working with ODOT to improve the roads.

"You've probably noticed a lot of construction in the area," said Danny Henley, ODOT transportation superintendent. "And we're in the process of widening a lot of our bridges and overpasses."

For some drivers, the overall message of safety--has already clicked.

"I definitely think people don't wear their seat belts as much as they should," said Haley Kerr, a driver. "So it's good."
