ARDMORE, OK - A bill approved in the Oklahoma House of Representatives hopes to deter poaching by increasing its punishments.
House Bill 2573 was authored by State Representative Pat Ownbey. The bill would make a first offense penalty for poaching a fine of $500 to $1,500. A second offense would be punishable by a $1,500 to $2,500 fine or six months in a county jail, or both.
"That just matches the trespassing laws that are now in effect," Ownbey said. "On top of that, a new law that we are going to add to that on a second offense someone who is poaching could lose their hunting or fishing license from one to ten years."
The bill was approved by a 61-33 vote and is headed to the Senate for consideration.
