Oklahoma Lottery officials warn of scam calls

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma Lottery officials are warning of a scam that attempts to get people to believe they've won money, primarily in the Mega Millions game.

Lottery director Rollo Redburn says in a news release that the lottery's security department has been receiving calls from people asking if they've actually won or if the call is a scam.

He says most of the calls are from the 876 area code and the caller says the person has won money and additional prizes such as a car or a trip - but the person must pay taxes first.

Redburn says the calls are not from the Oklahoma Lottery and that lottery winners will never be asked to make an up-front payment.

The 876 area code is used in Jamaica.
