OHP thanks state rep for heroic act

DURANT, OK -- Oklahoma Highway Patrol Troopers said thank you today to State Representative Dustin Roberts. They say they are thankful for people like Roberts who are willing to help others.

State Representative Dustin Roberts was honored Tuesday afternoon for his heroic acts. Back in February 2011 Roberts was headed north on I-35, for his first day of session in Oklahoma City. That's when he saw an OHP Trooper in a struggle on the side of the highway.

"A Trooper had somebody pulled over on the side of the road and I noticed they were rolling around and instructed my cousin to pull over and jumped out and ran to help..I identified myself," Roberts said.

That Trooper, Mark Glenn, was at the award ceremony to thank Roberts once again for his help.

"He did really well as opposed to someone just running up. Because we don't know if they're there to help us or if they're there to help the actual suspect," Trooper Glenn said.

Roberts helped control the situation and he says he would do it again in a heartbeat.

"Without a doubt. That is without a doubt, and I wish everybody would pull over and stop and help anybody in any situation regardless of if it's a trooper fighting on the side of the road, chasing somebody, broke down car any type of situation. We always need to lend a helping hand to anybody," said Roberts.

While Roberts appreciates the award, he made it clear, he believes Trooper Glenn is the true hero.

"I just want to thank Trooper Glenn for his actions and his dedication to our state, and I want to thank all of the Troopers throughout the state for their actions and what they do," Roberts said.

OHP says they are grateful for the help, as long as it does not put anyone at risk.

"I mean, it's a great thing for someone to stop and assist us. It's just very important they know the right way to approach it," said Glenn.

The right way is to identify yourself to the officer and let them know you are there to help them.

A lot of Troopers came to show Representative Roberts their appreciation today. They say they can't thank him enough, because their job is a dangerous one and they are glad the arrest ended the way it did.
