ADA, OK - Thursday night sheriff's deputy Tyler Mackey was booked into the Pontotoc County Justice Center.
Sheriff John Christian says he's shocked.
"Very surprised," Christian said. "Tyler is one of my best deputies; he's very active in the community and helping out with different organizations."
Mackey is facing a charge of embezzlement. and knowingly concealing stolen property. In January Mackey allegedly took the upper of an AR-15 rifle from an arrest and failed to put it into evidence.
The sheriff said when he found out in March he told Mackey to log it in immediately. Thursday night an OSBI investigation confirmed the upper still hadn't been put into evidence.
"it was determined that he had failed to document it, that he still had it in his possession," said Christian.
One woman who's been in the jail before and knows Mackey said she didn't see it coming.
"I've done time at the Pontotoc County jail before and he was one of the jailers and he's always been a good guy; he's always taken really good care of us," said Latarsha Grant.
Mackey appeared in court for his arraignment Friday afternoon. The sheriff said he's on unpaid leave until the court proceedings are over.
And his future with the sheriff's office is uncertain.
"If he's found not guilty of these charges we would have to look at that at that time," he said.
