Randy Travis found naked and drunk, spends night in jail

TIOGA, TEXAS -- Country music superstar Randy Travis was arrested in Tioga Tuesday night for DWI.

Grayson County Sheriff's Office says a 911 caller saw Travis lying here in the road, off FM 922 and Clover Road.

Texas Highway Patrol troopers say he was drunk and naked, near his 1998 Trans Am.

This is his second alcohol-related arrest in North Texas in less than a year.

But this time, not only was he charged with DWI, he was also charged with Retaliation for threatening the troopers that arrested him.

A local alcohol abuse counselor says Travis's behavior concerns him.

"Alcoholism is a disease and it is as life-threatening, maybe more so than cancer," Four Rivers Outreach Executive Director Arthur Horn said.

Arthur adds that it can affect anyone, from Joe Schmoe, to Randy Travis.

"It doesn't respect your age, your economic status, or whatever that may be, it will destroy anybody," Horn said.

Some of Travis's local fans didn't take the news as seriously.

"Uh, besides rolling on the ground laughing, man, that's just kinda shocking," Randy Travis fan Rowdy Jones said.

"If anybody else did that, we wouldn't be standing here talking about it, leave the man alone," fan Mike Bays.

"I mean, it don't take much for somebody to just go out there and have a couple beers and get loose on the streets, I mean, anybody does it," Jones said.

Arthur says that Travis's actions may call for intervention. He says we don't know if Travis has a long history of alcohol problems.

"It escalates. Sometimes they caught early in their alcoholism. Sometimes they do it for a long time before they get caught with a DWI," Horn said.

"I mean if it's a continuing process, he probably needs to go to rehab or something, but other than that..." Jones said.

Travis was released on bond Wednesday. A preliminary hearing has not been set.
