OKLAHOMA CITY – Newly elected Speaker Jeff W. Hickman has selected state Rep. Pat Ownbey to serve on his leadership team. Hickman was elected speaker Feb. 10, 2014.
“There are many of us in the House Republican Caucus who have been concerned about the state of funding for our schools; for teacher, trooper and corrections officer pay raises; and for other needs that are critical to quality state government service,” said Ownbey, R-Ardmore. “I plan to help Speaker Hickman to advance these causes while continuing to support a low income tax and other conservative policies that aid the economic development of our communities. I look forward to this expanded role and hope to use it for the benefit of Southern Oklahoma.”
Ownbey, who chairs the House Human Services Committee, is the sponsor of legislation to provide an independent process to help foster parents address disputes with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. He was part of the special legislative team that worked on and enacted child welfare reforms under Speaker Kris Steele.
This year, Ownbey is also co-authoring legislation to increase teacher pay and sponsoring bills to restrict the use of e-cigarettes by minors and expand drug trafficking laws to address prescription drugs.
“It’s an honor to serve in leadership with Speaker Hickman and I look forward to a productive session,” Ownbey said.
