SHERMAN, TX -- We're all excited to dig into our Thanksgiving dinner Thursday, but it's important to follow some tips to avoid getting sick.

When it comes to the main dish, the turkey, it's important you do not thaw your turkey at room temperature. If you stuff your turkey the stuffing needs to reach 165 degrees before it's safe to eat.

Make sure you're constantly washing your hands and cleaning the kitchen counters to avoid contamination. Once your food is cooked, don't let it sit out for more than two hours.

"Getting as much things done the day before, getting as many items on your menu done the day before, that's less on your plate the day of. So that's more time you have to focus on sanitation, more time you have to focus on the cleanliness of your kitchen, and more time to focus on your family and friends," Executive Chef Billy Holloway said.

Chef Billy Holloway says leftovers can last about three or four days, then it's a good idea to throw them out.
