Seasonal jobs up for grabs in Texoma

SHERMAN, TX -- Many area retailers are now hiring for seasonal jobs, as we get closer to the holiday shopping season. But, you might be surprised about what other industries are hiring this time of year.

Deck the halls with more employees, as the holiday shopping season nears, seasonal jobs up for grabs.

"It takes about 50 percent more manpower hours to get the merchandise in the store, on the shelves, and then also to take care of the customer service end," Barger Tygart said.

Sherman JCPenney manager, Barger Tygart, says with fewer shopping days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, they're in need of 30 more employees to handle the rush.

"They've got six days fewer to shop this year. I think they've figured it out. So, we need more help earlier this year than we have in the past," he said.

Target is looking to hire 70,000 more people across the country. And Walmart and Kohl's are hiring more than 50,000 seasonal employees. But, they're not the only ones.

"Opportunities are not just limited to retail this time of year," April Donovan said.

Snelling Staffing Services owner, April Donovan, says seasonal positions in the manufacturing industry are now available in Texoma.

"They may ramp up towards the end of the year to hit a certain production level before the end of the year. Or, they may need to process raw materials so there's no carry over into the new year," Donovan said.

Donovan says when applying you should set yourself apart from the rest. Be well-groomed and well-dressed. Attach a resume to your application, and follow up with the employer.

"Continual follow up shows persistence. It shows consistent type of behavior, which is desirable to a lot of employers," Donovan said.

Donovan and Tygart say, in many cases, a seasonal job can turn into full-time employment.
