Semi truck wreck slows US75 at Red River Bridge

COLBERT, OK -- An accident this morning has shut down part of
highway 75 at the Red River Bridge.

It happened around midnight when witnesses say one semi going northbound at about 70-75 miles per hour rear-ended another one.

The initial impact left a large scuff on the road clearly visible on the northbound lane. Drivers witnessed the passenger door of the second semi fly off and hit a nearby guardrail.

Glass shards and hundreds of frozen turkey that the second truck was transporting was thrown all over the road causing another potential hazard for drivers behind the wreck.

The driver of the first semi was taken by ambulance to Texoma Medical Center in Denison. The other driver was removed from his vehicle with the jaws of life and taken to Plano Medical Center by Care-Flight. Both are in critical condition. Their names are not being released at this time.

Police and fire from Colbert, Atoka, Denison and Cartwright were at the scene. Assistant Colbert Fire Chief Jonathan Horn says he's working with the other officials to sort out the details of this major accident but the case is still under investigation.

Clean up crews expect to take several more hours at the accident site after spending all morning collecting turkey and debris.

"It'll take most of the day," said Horn. "They'll have to unload the first truck and pick up all the turkeys that are scattered all over the road."

Right now only one lane is open on northbound 75 along with one southbound lane. Allow for extra time if you're headed that way today or use an alternate route. Clean up crews plan to work most of today clearing the wreckage from the median.

Officials are asking drivers slow down to at least 15 to 30 miles per hour when passing through.
