SHERMAN, TEXAS -- It's no secret that Sherman and Denison are great places to retire; now, AARP is backing that up, naming the area a Top 10 place to "retire for less."
It's programs like these at the Renaissance retirement community in Sherman that make the area a hot spot for retired seniors.
"We offer three meals a day, we offer housekeeping services, activities," Renaissance Community Manager Jennifer Harris said.
Renaissance, one of the longest operating retirement communities in Texoma, is fully equipped with a bank, beauty salon, café, chapel and workout room.
"We offer independent living and then for those that need a little more assistance, we offer assisted living, as well," Harris said.
But Sherman Chamber of Commerce President Eddie Brown says it's not just what these facilities have to offer that make Sherman and Denison a great place to retire.
"We're experiencing double digit growth from the retirees in this area, and that's the projected growth as well, is double digits," Brown said.
AARP cites the median Sherman and Denison home price at $79,000, mortgage payment at about $300 and annual property tax under $1,200.
"There's no tax on social security, no tax on pensions, and no state income tax here either, and it's just a great place," Brown said.
Harris says it's the quality of life that sells retirees on the area.
"They like a little more quiet lifestyle and Sherman's that small town community that almost everyone can relate to, no matter where they're from," Harris said.
