Sherman Police Chief now able to appoint assistant chiefs

SHERMAN, TX -- The Sherman Police Chief will now be able to appoint his assistant chiefs.

The city council unanimously voted to change an ordinance Monday night to let the Police Chief appoint his two assistant chiefs, rather than officers having to test for the position. Chief Otis Henry says the change is beneficial because it will allow him to have a better look at a candidate instead of just going off a test score.

"I can look at stuff like leadership traits and management skills and supervisory skills and team building and consensus building. Those kind of things," Chief Henry said.

This change comes after the recent retirement of Assistant Chief Ken Francis. Chief Henry says he hopes to fill his position by the first week of August.
