Sherman council hears presentation on road projects and pet adoptions

SHERMAN, TX -- Thanks to a lot of effort and energy more pets are being adopted from the Sherman Animal Shelter.

Chief Animal Control Officer Scott Parker shared the success of the volunteer and adoption program at Monday night's city council meeting. He says setting up at PETCO has helped increase adoptions. Parker says volunteers make it possible to be outside the store three days a week. He also recognized a large donation from a Sherman resident who matched $5,000 of money raised at a benefit fun run over the holidays. Parker says some of that money is being used to treat animals who are ill.

The Sherman City Council also got an update on city road projects at the meeting.

City Engineer Clay Barnett says currently they are repairing areas of Texoma Parkway and wrapping up with signal upgrades and widening Travis Street.

City officials say an upcoming project will be to widen Loy Lake bridge to 6 lanes. Construction is planned to start by August of this year.

Barnett says plans are also in the works to reconstruct U.S. 75 near Shepard Drive, and in effort to better roadways the council approved to put up a stop sign at the intersection of Ricketts St. and Hunt St.
