Smart phone apps can help you ring in 2013 safely

SHERMAN, TEXAS -- New Year's Eve is festive and fun, but it can also be a dangerous night out on the roads.

Luckily, there are a few apps for your smart phones that can help you ring in 2013 safely.

Allison Harris researched the free apps you might consider downloading before heading out the door.

Many of you have told us your New Year's Eve plans.

Folks at Fossil Creek Liquor say more and more Texomans are heading into their store.

"It will be swamped and really busy. We did have people standing at the doors this morning waiting to get in. Of course the rain will cause them to be a little bit later but they'll be out and about," Fossil Creek Liquor store manager Joy Brooks said.

If you plan on heading out tonight, Gizmodo has named a handful of night on the town apps.

Once you hit the town, apps like Yelp, Foursquare and SceneTap have a GPS feature that can help you find your friends if you get disconnected.

SceneTap will even tell you how crowded a bar is, what the male to female ratio is like and what the general age range is.

For tonight, the most important apps are those that can help keep you safe.

Say that I go out to a New Year's Eve party tonight and have a few drinks. I can open up this BAC calculator app on my phone. At my weight, if I drink one beer over a three hour time span, I'm under the legal limit, but if I drink three beers in a three hour time span -- don't even think about it.

This BAC calculator, called R-U-Buzzed, was developed by the Colorado Department of Transportation.

But the app merely gives you an estimate of your blood alcohol level, so if you have been drinking at all, just don't drive.

"We understand that people are going to drink alcohol with it being New Year's Eve. The best thing to do is to have somebody that can be there completely sober," Sherman Police Sgt. D.M. Hampton said.

Various taxi cab apps can help you with that.

"Use any apps, use anything you can to know that you're going to be safe driving and with law enforcement out, one drink is going to be all it takes," Brooks said.
