Southern Texoma prepares for inclement weather

SHERMAN, TEXAS -- Texoma hasn't seen blustering winter weather like West Texas has today, but local law enforcement and transportation agencies are ready if mother nature takes a turn for the worse.

"We are here and we're ready and we have all the materials to put out on the highways if it happens," Tray Turner with TXDOT said.

TXDOT's Paris District sent six of their employees to Lubbock to assist in this storm. Here in Texoma, they also made some severe weather preparations.

"We make sure all the equipment's inventoried and calibrated for quick response and make sure all of our stock piles are replenished," Turner said.

In the event of severe weather, TXDOT works with local police departments, like Sherman, to maintain safety on the roadways.

"We pretty much know the areas that are going to need to be sanded or graveled, and so they will try to start coordinating with them through our dispatch to let them know hey this area is hazardous or is starting to get that way and we're starting to have multiple incidents here," Sgt. D.M. Hampton with Sherman police said.

Both TXDOT and Sherman police department's biggest safety concern is people driving in bad weather. Tray Turner with TXDOT says just don't get behind the wheel.

Up in Durant, Oklahoma Highway Patrol puts more officers on standby when there's a chance for winter weather.

"First thing we do is notify all of our guys that they're on call and to be prepared for winter weather," Lt. Scott Hampton with Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.

They wear these weather-friendly uniforms and rev up their four wheel drive vehicles, waiting for OHP headquarters to call them out to patrol roads.

"They will be basically watching over the whole incident and trying to decide what assets are needed where," Lt. Scott Hampton said.
