SHERMAN, TEXAS -- Lifeguards; summer's most quintessential job for teens. But even they say getting a summer job isn't easy.

"There's no one hiring. If you don't already have experience then it's really hard to get a job," high school senior Taryn Beauchamp said.

Beauchamp says, from her experience, companies don't want to hire untrained, inexperienced workers, a.k.a. teenagers.

"It doesn't feel like companies want to take the time to train people if they're going to hire them. They want them to already have the experience and the training," Beauchamp said.

She says that these days, for teens to land jobs, they need to be specialized and certified. That's why she and 16 year-old Nicole Segich are lifeguards. They both have lots of swimming experience from high school swim team.

"A lot of kids try getting this job and sometimes it's hard because the tests are hard for some people. You have to learn and memorize a lot of stuff and you have to work with a lot of people," Segich said.

College lifeguard Bryanna Bradshaw had her first job at a movie theater when she was 15. She says her first job taught her valuable life lessons.

"Work for the money that I get and all the things that I need to buy. It taught me to be self-sufficient and it kinda helped me grow up a lot," Bradshaw said.

Bradshaw says she worries about today's teens getting a chance to develop important work and life skills.

"It is very concerning. What is their work ethic going to be in the future?"

And Segich says the economy is all the more reason for teens to build a good work ethic now.

"I think it's really important for a kid to start as early as they possibly can with the way the economy is going," Segich said.
