Texas GOP, Dems compete for minority vote

More is at stake in the Texas vote count than who is elected and who holds control of the Legislature, Congress and the White House. It's also shows if political strength is shifting from demographic group to demographic group.

Republicans have fielded Hispanic candidates against Democratic Hispanics in four congressional races and three Texas House campaigns, mostly in South Texas where Republicans have never done well. Hispanic Texans are the state's fastest growing group of voters. Less than half of the Texas population is Anglo.

Meanwhile, Democrats have worked to firm up support in Harris, Dallas and Bexar (BAYR) counties in the hope urban voters will lay the foundation for rebuilding the party in Texas.
