Texas bills propose state exemption for two north Tex. water utilities

DENISON, TX -- Two bills in the Texas legislature aim to allow two north Texas utility companies to continue pumping water from Lake Texoma.

Bills by Rep. Larry Phillips and Sen. Craig Estes will exempt the companies from a state law prohibiting the transportation of zebra mussels across state lines.

The Greater Texoma Utility Authority and North Texas Municipal Water District already received a federal exemption.

Jerry Chapman, GTUA general manager, said they have a closed-system facility.

"There are no zebra mussels being discharged into the rivers, lakes and streams of the state. Water goes from Lake Texoma straight to the treatment plant where they are eradicated in the treatment process," he said.

Chapman said another bill is trying to redraw the state border, putting the the pumping stations back in Texas.
