Texas lawmakers mull tracking chips in school IDs

University of Texas students evacuate campus after the university received a bomb threat Sept. 14, 2012, in Austin, Texas.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas House members have discussed a proposed ban on school districts requiring their students to use ID badges embedded with locator chips.

The bill by influential Republican Rep. Lois Kolkhorst of Brenham would allow voluntary use of such IDs, but wouldn't let schools mandate it.

Kolkhorst has introduced unsuccessful proposals since 2005 to limit chips in schools.

In detailing her latest bill Tuesday before the House Public Education Committee, Kolkhorst noted that similar tracking chips are used in commodities like cattle. She suggested that Texas youngsters deserve better.

State funding for schools is based on daily attendance, and some districts say the technology helps them provide the most-accurate count of students.

But chips made headlines recently when a San Antonio high school student sued, saying the technology violated her religion.
