Texas leaders stick to guns amid firearm crackdown

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Texas Legislature is in session, which means there's a lot of talk about guns.

From gun rights to guns in schools to telling the feds to keep their hands off Texans' weapons, there's no shortage of support in the Capitol for the right to bear arms.

Some issues are new: Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst wants state-paid specials weapons and tactics training for school teachers.

Others are old: Some bills would allow concealed handgun license holders to carry their weapons into college classrooms.

It's the debate of over guns in Texas that seems eternal. And in a state where guns are as much a part of frontier image as the Alamo, look for a much stronger push to expand gun rights than to restrict them.
