SHERWOOD SHORES, TEXAS -- A 67-year-old Sherwood Shores grandmother is waiting to undergo surgery after police say her handy man snuck into her home, sexually assaulted her and nearly beat her to death on Monday.
24-year-old David Shawn Fothergill is a neighborhood handy man for many in Sherwood Shores, including the elderly woman he's accused of attacking.
Lt. Rickey Wheeler with the Grayson County Sheriff's Office says the victim woke up in the middle of the night at her home, in the 100 block of Friar Tuck Drive, to see Fothergill standing over her.
Wheeler says Fothergirll attacked her and left her in a pool of blood, likely unconscious.
When she re-gained consciousness around 7:30 the next morning, she dialed 911.
Wheeler says if she hadn't fought for her life, they would likely be dealing with a homicide.
"It was very disturbing. There was a large amount of blood in the room, the furniture was torn up and some other things in the house that led us to believe she put up a very good fight," Wheeler said.
The victim has a broken nose, fractured jaw and two broken clavicles.
Wheeler says Fothergill has an extensive record with police for drug abuse and burglary, but this is the first time he's been charged with a violent crime.
Wheeler says they have ample evidence being sent off for DNA testing.
Fothergill's bond is set at $750,000 dollars.
