UPDATE: Obama names Rice as national security adviser

By  |

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama has named United Nations ambassador Susan Rice to take over as national security adviser in a shakeup of his foreign policy team.

The president called her a "patriot who puts country first" in a Rose Garden announcement Wednesday. She has been the subject of Republican criticism over her inaccurate explanation of the attacks that killed four Americans in Libya last year.

Rice replaces Tom Donilon, who is resigning as of July 1.

Obama nominated human rights expert Samantha Power to replace Rice at the United Nations. Power left a position as White House adviser this year.
