A combination of very strong winds, falling temperatures and frozen precipitation will make Wednesday and Wednesday night dangerous for motorists. Freezing rain and sleet will change to snow before ending late Wednesday or early Thursday. Wind chills of 5 to 10 degrees...with air temperatures in the low 20s...can be expected. Roads will be icy Thursday morning but should melt during the day as skies clear and temperatures rise above freezing.
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) - The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected appeals for Mexican national Edgar Tamayo, clearing the way for the Texas death row inmate's execution for the slaying of a Houston police officer 20 years ago.
Tamayo's case has drawn criticism from the Mexican government and pressure from the U.S. State Department after attorneys argued Tamayo wasn't immediately advised he could seek help from the Mexican consulate following his arrest in 1994.
The high court considered at least two late appeals. One focused on whether he was mentally impaired and ineligible for the death penalty. The other was related to the consular issue.
The execution was scheduled for after 6 p.m. Wednesday, but the death warrant remained in effect until midnight.
