LANE, OK-- Since 1986 the U.S.D.A Genetics and Productions Research Lab has been operating in Lane, Oklahoma.
The lab provides information to the local farmers to help the quality of crops.
Now, after more than 20 years of service, the research facility is closing and area producers are concerned about how the shut down will effect them.
Dianne Sivis' is selling her farm's cabbage this winter because of help she got from the U.S.D.A. Research Lab in Lane.
Another producer of organic crops is Joe Townsend. He says he moved to the area because of the help the lab gave him, when he was looking to move his farm from Tennessee.
"They gave us advice about what to look for, pointed areas that we should look at for growing organically. That right there, helped us tremendously from the get go," Townsend, said.
This week, 12 Agriculture Research locations were e-mailed and told they're scheduled to close. The research lab in Lane was one of the buildings being shut down because of $39 million in budget cuts.
Vince Russo, the Research Leader in Lane, has been working there for over 20 years helping farmers locally and nationally. He says their help is instrumental in assisting farmers.
"What we do is provide a knowledge base so that they can take the information that they have already and improve it, go to the next step and do whatever they need to do," Russo, said.
Sivis gives a big thanks to the research center to the success of her farm. She said she'll miss it.
"If I have problems, I can just come down and have and see what the analysis was and see that my vegetables are growing." Sivis, adds, "We thoroughly enjoy this place."
Russo along with the 13 other employees, currently working in Lane, are unsure of the their futures.
"This is home now," according to Russo, "and there are a lot of people that aren't going to have a home anymore."
