TEXAS -- A new scam is sweeping the nation and the Texas Attorney General is warning residents of it.

The scam claims Americans can get federal financial assistance to help cover the cost of utility bills. With the use of social media, solicitation, fliers, phone calls and text messages, scammers claim that they are a new federal program established by Obama.

The scammers tell customers they must provide their Social Security and bank routing numbers. Those who give out personal information are given a fake bank routing number to pay their utility bills.

The Texas attorney general warns to never give out your social security number.
