DENISON, TX - A violent struggle occurred Monday morning between Grayson College Police and a student who they believe was high on a synthetic drug. Victoria Maranan spoke with a witness and a campus police officer about what happened.

Grayson College Police say they got a call from bookstore employees Monday morning that a student had been displaying signs of paranoia.Then after speaking with counselors, the student began her rampage on campus.

Grayson College student, Curtis Baxter was on-campus to take care of some paperwork when he heard something out of the ordinary.

"We could hear the screams in the parking lot. We don't know what it was at first, we thought it was a play or something. When we get closer, it got louder, it was just God awful screams," he said.

As he got closer to the administration building, he couldn't believe what he saw.

"The campus security sitting on her back with his knee, with her handcuffed with a taser still on her, tasing her," he said.

At around 9:00 am, Grayson College Police said they were called to a disturbance at the school bookstore, where a student was said to have a psychotic episode.
She apparently then walked to the administration building.

"Began going from office to office screaming that people are following her, trying to get her, trying to rape her, things of that nature. At that point it's been decided by myself and other members of the executive administration that we needed to do an emergency detention on this young lady," said GC Director of Public Safety, Andrew McPherson.

He said the student was very violent, that she kicked officers, even bit one in the arm.

"We were able to get one handcuff on her and at that point she became very aggressive towards us, began fighting with us. We did have to deploy our taser to prevent her from hurting staff members and herself," McPherson said.

But it didn't end there.

"In several occasions she came close to striking her head on the concrete because of the way she was thrashing about. We deployed the taser once again to be able to get her at the back of the patrol car for her safety, however the taser didn't have much of an effect on her at all," he said.

McPherson said the student has been sent to Texoma Medical Center for evaluation.

"They were able to administer several drugs to calm her down. During questioning, she apparently admitted to hospital staff that she has taken 'bath salts' at some point in time," he said.

Baxter said even if the woman had been under the influence, he couldn't believe how the situation was handled.

"What I saw was just too brutal. I mean I haven't seen things like that in a long time and this is home, we don't treat people like that," he said.

"All officers out there will tell you they don't want to use force. They don't want to use tasers, they don't' want to use physical force. But the problem with 'bath salts' is, you're having to use extreme force, such as a taser and it may not even be effective," said McPherson.

McPherson said after MHMR fully evaluates the student, they'll decide whether or not to file charges. The student's name has not been released and the officer is okay.
