Wife of Denison drowning victim calls him "her hero"

DENISON, TEXAS -- Sondra Cowart is looking back on the millions of memories with her husband, 38 year-old Kenneth Brandon Cowart, during their 19 years together.

"He'd fish and I'd lay out on the rocks just so we could be together. Fisherman always. Very avid bow hunter. His favorite saying was, 'It's not a challenge if you're not using a bow,'" Sondra said.

Last weekend, Brandon was out at the Denison Dam, fishing for catfish, when he saw two young boys struggling in the water. Brandon jumped in and saved the boys from drowning, but couldn't save himself.

"I wouldn't have wanted him to go any other way and I almost wouldn't have wanted him to go any other place. That was his favorite place in the world," Sondra said.

Today, Brandon's co-workers at Ruiz Foods honored his life with a vigil at the dam.

People who have heard Brandon's story call him a hero. Including Sondra's best friend, a Marine.

"Yeah, I've served in the forces and that's what he was proud of that, but he's my hero. I can't find another hero like him," Deborah Moore said.

"He is my hero," Sondra said.

Brandon leaves behind Sondra and his three teenage kids.

"He was a wonderful son, a wonderful father and a very wonderful husband and friend to all. And a hero. Always a hero," Sondra said.

To donate to the family, go to any Landmark Bank location and tell them you would like to make a donation to the Kenneth Cowart fund.
