VELMA, OK - A Wilson man made his first court appearance since being involved in a fatal wreck near Velma over the weekend.

37-year-old John Caxton was in Stephens County court Tuesday where he faces a charge of first degree manslaughter. According to police, Claxton was unlawfully driving a tractor trailer Saturday night, carrying nearly 80,000 pounds of liquid down West Highway 7. They say Robert Bench of Duncan pulled in front of Claxton at an intersection and was killed when the two vehicles collided.

According to the district attorney, Claxton is being charged because he doesn't hold a Class "D" driver's license, carries no commercial license, and has no hazmat certification.

Records also show Claxton has had his driving privilege revoked 8 times in the last 15 years.
