ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - A slain military sniper whose memoir sparked a lawsuit from former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura admitted before his death that he removed Ventura's name from the book because he was afraid of being sued.

Ventura sued anyway, and his defamation claim against Chris Kyle's estate is unfolding this week in federal court in St. Paul, Minnesota. Ventura says Kyle invented a story about punching him at a bar after Ventura supposedly badmouthed Navy SEALs.

Kyle was killed last year in an attack at a Texas gun range. In a video deposition, he said early drafts of his book named Ventura in describing an alleged confrontation.

Kyle said he convinced his co-authors that Ventura's name should come out. The book ultimately referred to Ventura as "Scruff Face" instead.
