TEXOMA--The U.S. Postal Service has decided to take a step back on closing thousands of post offices across the nation despite losing more than $8 billion dollars in revenue last year.
U.S.P.S. officials agreed Tuesday to delay closing 3,700 post offices by a few months. So instead of starting to close offices in January and March, the postal service decided to wait for Congress to make a decision that can help the agency save money.
Postal service representative McKinney Boyd said the U.S.P.S. is waiting on lawmakers to pass a measure giving Congress authority to prevent the agency from going bankrupt. Because right now, Boyd said, the postal service is losing $23 million everyday and they're predicted to lose another $14.1 billion next year. He said post offices studied for possible closure will stay open during the delay.

"We would like for our customers to understand that we're losing $23 million everyday. We're not targeting any post office for any specific reason in any community, what we're trying to do is remain efficient," he said.

Boyd said the U.S.P.S. is planning to start closing post offices in May.
