ARDMORE, OK -- United Way of South Central Oklahoma is having their annual kickoff event Monday evening from 4:30 to 7:30 at Mountain View Mall in Ardmore. Campaign Drive Chair Al Schneider says all 33 of United Way's agencies will be there so the public can get to know the agencies and learn what services are available to them.
He says he's been touched to see what amazing work the organizations have been able to provide.
"It was just amazing visiting the agencies, and seeing how many people that they try to help, and then the lives that they can affect and they way that they can be affected," Schneider said.
CASA of Southern Oklahoma is one of the non-profit organizations under United Way. They say their mission is "to speak for the best interests of abused and neglected children in the courts". Executive Director Lynn Riley says this year they've served about 224 children, and with the financial help from United Way they've been able to provide for many kids' needs.
"We had one little boy that wanted to be in the band, and the CASA went out to the pawn shops and found a trombone for him, and we were able to purchase that," Riley said.
United Way of South Central Oklahoma Executive Director Tobi Ervin says there's an organization in the area for any community need, and says you may never know when you or a family member might need one of them to lean on.
"You may go home tomorrow and open the door and your house explodes in a blaze. Well if you got your children with you Red Cross is going to be there to make sure that they've got clothes to wear to school the next day," Ervin said.
For the next couple months United Way and its agencies will be fundraising to try and meet their goal of 800,000 dollars. All the money raised will be dispersed among all the organizations.
