CHOUTEAU, Okla. (AP) - A drag-boat racer from Michigan was
killed when his boat crashed during a Southern Drag Boat
Association race on Grand River in Mayes County.
St. Louis Drag Boat Association president Fred Welshens said
Sunday John Haas was on his second qualifying pass when his boat
"made a couple of funny moves and crashed" on the water about 2
p.m. Saturday. Welshens didn't know Haas' hometown.
Welshens says Southern Drag Boat Association inspectors released
Haas' vessel back to the group Saturday night after examining it.
He says they found nothing wrong with the boat, but they didn't
know what caused the crash.
Neither the Oklahoma Highway Patrol nor officials with the
Southern Drag Boat Association immediately returned calls seeking
Welshens called Haas a friend and said he died doing what he
