Motorists jam toll machines with trash, pennies

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma Turnpike Authority officials say motorists are jamming automatic toll machines with everything from trash to pennies.

Spokesman Jack Damrill says items found in the machines include diapers and soda bottles. And he says some people think they can get away with using pennies instead of the proper toll.

The authority sometimes asks the Oklahoma Highway Patrol to set up operations to catch motorists who drive off without paying the correct toll.

And cameras at some locations allow the authority to catch motorists on video who don't pay the correct tolls.

Damaged automatic coin machines malfunction by not recording the correct amount of change which often requires motorists to put in additional money before registering the toll as paid.
