McAlester church damaged by New Year's Eve fire

McALESTER, Okla. (AP) - McAlester's fire chief says a church building damaged by fire can be repaired.

The fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon at the King's House church, not long after members had left the building after taking down Christmas decorations.

Church Pastor Felix Waller says workers from nearby businesses reported a series of power surges before the fire started at the church building.

Fire Chief Harold Stewart says the fire started in a room in the back of the building, but that the cause of the blaze has not been determined.

He says the fire damage was contained to two rooms, with other rooms suffering smoke and water damage. Stewart says the building suffered no structural damage and can be saved.
