Seminole Co. sheriff resists calls to step down

WEWOKA, Okla. (AP) - A county sheriff who admitted giving alcohol to a teenage girl is resisting calls to step down.

Seminole County Sheriff Joe Craig pleaded guilty Feb. 6 to misdemeanor counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and transporting an open container of alcohol. He was sentenced to 50 hours of community service and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine.

According to court records, the 62-year-old Craig and the girl were driving in his personal vehicle last March when he encouraged the girl to drink vodka and wine coolers.

Tax records show the girl worked for Seminole County in 2008.

A telephone message left for Craig by The Associated Press today was not returned.

The three county commissioners asked Craig to resign at a commissioners' meeting on Feb. 9, but Commissioner John Kirby says
Craig declined.
