BIXBY, Okla. (AP) - Police in Bixby say a 46-year-old Inola man is in critical condition after shooting himself to end a standoff that began when he kidnapped his ex-girlfriend.
Police Chief Ike Shirley says the incident began Tuesday morning when Earl Applegate forced the woman at gunpoint into his car and drove away as police arrived.
Shirley says officers were able to stop the car but Applegate refused to talk for about 45 minutes until he answered his cell phone.
The chief says Applegate said he had "a lot of problems" then shot himself in the head.
The woman was not injured.
