EDMOND, Okla. (AP) - Intense flames and gusty winds hampered efforts by Edmond firefighters to contain a large blaze that engulfed an apartment complex that is under construction.
There were no immediate reports of injuries. Lara O'Leary of the Emergency Medical Services Authority said Monday that ambulances were on standby in the area, but paramedics hadn't treated any patients.
Fire Prevention Chief Tim Wheeler told reporters that firefighters received a call about the fire shortly before 6 p.m. Wheeler says by the time crews arrived, the complex was heavily involved from the bottom floor to the roof.
Wheeler says the complex, located in northeast Edmond, was still under construction.
South winds of 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts whipped the flames, and smoke could be seen from miles away.
