Stillwater chamber head questions grant to mayor
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) - The president of the Stillwater Chamber of Commerce is questioning a grant awarded to Mayor Nathan Bates.
Bates received a $5,000 grant through a local economic development program that includes the chamber, Oklahoma State University and Meridian Technology Center. He plans to open a bar and upscale apartments.
Chamber President Larry Brown said in a Feb. 26 letter to OSU officials who awarded the grant that it is "suspect at best." Brown says the grant application didn't include Bates' or his partner's name and lacks details about the budget and business plan.
Bates says all he did was submit a grant proposal and says he did nothing wrong.
OSU officials associated with the program did not return phone calls for comment.
