NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - Norman police say a man who may have been suicidal pointed a gun at officers before they shot and killed him.
According to a news release from the police department on Friday, Officers Jeremy Sterling, Sean McKenna and Steven Norton approached Jesse Michael Shipley April 23 on the patio outside his apartment after receiving a report that he was intoxicated and suicidal.
Police say despite officers' commands, Shipley picked up a gun that was lying nearby and pointed it at the officers. Officials say the officers fired at Shipley in defense of their lives.
Shipley was taken by ambulance to Norman Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Sterling, McKenna and Norton are on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
