NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - More than 100 scientists, students and others interested in the causes of severe weather are preparing to go in search of tornadoes.
They're part of the Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment that begins Saturday and runs through June 15. The goal is to learn more about how, when and why tornadoes form.
The project is also known as VORTEX2 and comes after a similar project last year in which scientists traveled about 10,000 miles in their study of twisters.
The scientists hope to gather the information that will improve their understanding of why one thunderstorm produces a tornado and another does not.
