Okla. prosecutors charge man with child stealing
HUGO, Okla. (AP) - Choctaw County prosecutors have charged a man with child stealing for allegedly taking a 4-year-old Hugo girl from her home.
Authorities in Paris, Texas, arrested Walter Caffey on May 12 after Hugo police issued an alert. He's now free on bond.
Police say Caffey claimed to be the girl's father and they were told he left with the child to get a soda but never returned.
Caffey says the girl is his daughter and he wasn't trying to abduct her. He said he was staying at the residence and she wanted to go with him when he left that day and went to visit a friend in Paris.
Choctaw County District Attorney Laura Wallis says the child stealing charge is used when a family member or parent is involved.
