Okla City schools may not rehire 1st year teachers

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - First-year teachers in the Oklahoma City
School District have been told their contracts may not be renewed
next year.
The district is notifying 360 teachers that renewal of their
contracts is uncertain as school officials look to cut nearly $17
million from next year's budget. The district has received $18
million less than expected in state aid because of the budget
shortfall and faces a cut of about $4.5 million in state aid for
next year.
A list of possible cuts obtained by The Oklahoman through an
open records request shows the district could save $12 million by
not renewing the contracts of about 300 first-year teachers.
Tulsa school officials have already sent nonrenewal letters to
286 teachers but say they hope to eventually hire many of them
back.
