The chairman of the Oklahoma Republican Party has decided to seek the GOP nomination for State Auditor and Inspector.
Gary Jones filed for the post Wednesday afternoon with less than one hour remaining in the three-day filing period. Jones had said as recently as Monday that he was leaning against making a third run for the statewide seat.
Jones lost in the general election to Democrat Jeff McMahan in 2002 and 2006. McMahan left office in 2008 after being charged with accepting bribes and later was sentenced to prison.
In July 2008, Gov. Brad Henry appointed Democrat Steve Burrage,
who is seeking his first full term in office. Jones will face a primary opponent in Republican David Haniger of Edmond, a longtime employee of the state auditor's office.
