OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A Blanchard man has entered pleas in
connection with a bank robbery during which his former wife was shot to death.
Samuel Lewis pleaded no contest to first-degree murder and shooting with an intent to kill, and pleaded guilty to attempted robbery during a hearing on Wednesday. A judge scheduled an Aug. 10 date for formal sentencing.
Authorities say Lewis was shot in the chest during a July 18 shootout with a security guard as he and Barbara Payton Lewis tried to rob a MidFirst Bank in northwest Oklahoma City. Barbara Lewis was killed.
The prosecutor said Samuel Lewis fired at the security guard, who was cut by flying glass. A defense attorney said Samuel Lewis was trying to get the guard to stop shooting at Barbara Lewis.
